For our idea for the pitch, we started thinking about how we could change the standard idea of a gallery/exhibition. What if it wasn’t a formal exhibition, and instead something around the city of Leeds, perhaps even sort of a scavenger hunt sort of idea where people are encouraged to go and find the work.
Someone mentioned the idea of pasting up posters, and how we could put them all over the city which would be an interesting approach to take. The exhibition would be submission based - we would set a theme based on a word which people could generate work based on - I.e. motion, identity, metropolis. Then we would put the posters up everywhere and people would be able to go and find them, take pictures of them, post them online etc. and for the people passing by who don’t know what the posters are for, there would be a logo, instagram handle etc so they could find out.
I had the idea that maybe this could be an ongoing thing, we could set maybe 6 of these little submission based projects, paste up the posters and then at the end we could have a more formal exhibition, displaying some of the best work, as well as maybe some of the photos people have taken of the work. It would be interesting to see how the work is interacted with in a public space; will it be ripped, graffitied over, would another poster be pasted over it?
One thing I am concerned about which a lot of the team don’t seem to be acknowledging is the legality of this idea. Where can we stick up posters legally etc. Will we have to ask permission from the council our whoever owns the building? This is something we will have to research and maybe send out some emails.
